Governor Bago Retains Deputy Yakubu Garba as Running Mate for 2027 Governorship Election
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has officially announced that Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba will remain his running mate for the 2027 governorship election, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to continuity, stability, and effective governance. The announcement was made during an extraordinary meeting of the Niger State Executive Council held at the Government House in Minna, where senior government officials and political stakeholders were present.
Governor Bago explained that the decision was reached after careful consideration of the administration’s achievements since assuming office and the need to sustain ongoing development projects across the state. According to the governor, retaining Deputy Governor Garba demonstrates confidence in the existing leadership team and recognizes the deputy governor’s contributions to policy implementation, public administration, and the delivery of government programmes.
Speaking at the meeting, Governor Bago described his deputy as a dependable partner who has played a significant role in supporting the administration’s development agenda. He noted that the government has made notable progress in infrastructure development, agriculture, education, healthcare, and economic reforms, adding that maintaining the current leadership structure would help ensure continuity in the execution of these projects.
The governor also urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State to remain united and focused as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that political unity and cooperation among party members would be essential in consolidating the achievements of the administration and sustaining the confidence of the electorate.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by Governor Bago, describing the decision as both an honour and a responsibility. He pledged to continue working closely with the governor to deliver people-oriented programmes that will improve the lives of residents across the state’s 25 local government areas. Garba reaffirmed his commitment to supporting policies aimed at promoting economic growth, improving public services, and enhancing the welfare of citizens.
Political observers believe the early announcement is likely to strengthen the APC’s internal preparations ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Analysts say the move could help reduce uncertainty within the party, encourage greater cohesion among supporters, and provide sufficient time for the administration to focus on governance while gradually preparing for the next electoral cycle.
Residents and party supporters have reacted positively to the announcement, with many expressing optimism that continuity in leadership could help sustain ongoing development initiatives. Others noted that the administration will ultimately be judged by its performance in delivering infrastructure, improving security, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing social services before the next election.
As the countdown to the 2027 general elections gradually begins, Governor Bago’s decision to retain Yakubu Garba as his running mate signals the administration’s intention to build on its existing partnership while maintaining stability within the state’s leadership. Political analysts will continue to monitor developments as political parties prepare for what is expected to be another closely watched electoral contest in Niger State.
